Shenzhen: Iraq skipper Younus Mahmood scored on the stroke of half-time to give the 2007 AFC Asian Cup champions a valuable 1-0 win over China as Group A in the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup reached the halfway stage on Tuesday.
Iraq coach Zico, who led Japan to 2004 AFC Asian Cup glory with a defeat of hosts China, had spoken about the importance of Tuesday's match at the Shenzhen Bay Stadium and the narrow win put the Lions of Mesopotamia three points clear of the Chinese in the Group A standings with the Adnan Hamad-led Jordan leading the way with nine points after a 3-0 win in Singapore maintained their 100% record.
Younus Mahmood, scorer of Iraq's winner over Saudi Arabia in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup final, was once again the hero for his country with the Qatar-based star netting the only goal of a hard-fought encounter in the southern Chinese city in the 45th minute.
China's hopes of getting back into the game were given a boost in the 65th minute when Basem Abbas picked up his second yellow card of the match, having previously entered the notebook of Iranian referee Saeid Mozaffari in the 35th minute.
But Jose Camacho's side could not make their numerical advantage count as the ten-men of Iraq protected their one-goal lead for the remaining 25 minutes and held out for their second Group A win.
