Toshimi Shares Chinese Traditional Dragon Boat Festival with all over the world

The next Monday, 6 of June is Dragon Boat Festival. Here I would like to share this Chinese traditional festival with you.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and together with Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival forms one of the three major Chinese holidays. Since the summer is a time when diseases most easily spread, Dragon Boat Festival began as occation for driving off evil spirits and pestilence and for finding peace in one’s life. The festival was later enriched by the legend of the patriot Chu Yuan.

At the center of this festival are the dragon boat races. Competing teams drive their colorful dragon boats forward to the rhythm of beating drums. These exciting races were inspired by the villager’s valiant attempts to rescue Chu Yuan from the Mi Lo river. This tradition has remained unbroken for centuries.

For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.
